Summary

The agenda is now available for the January Plenary meeting (see further reading below). This will be an opportunity to discuss current issues in languages in higher education and gain up-to-date information on 2012 recruitment to language degree programmes nationally. The theme of the afternoon session is Open Access Publishing.

 

Themes

The morning meeting will include reports from officers of the UCML executive inviting discussion on:

  • 2012 recruitment, outward mobility, UCML-AULC-HEA survey of non-specialist learners, media coverage, primary languages, the HEFCE call for a new £3m project to promote language study, European Language Council, and the event Collaborative provision in languages to be held at the British Academy on 11 February 2013
  • Research Excellence Framework, Arts & Humanities Research Council, introduction to issues and debates in Open Aceess Publishing in preparation for the afternoon workshop
  • evaluation of UCML website, Facebook and Twitter
  • update on reform of A levels and KS4 qualifications (replacement for EBacc for GCSE). Please also see www.ucml.ac.uk/languages-education for texts of responses to consultations
